Meta’s Threads: A Comprehensive Guide to Meta's New App

Meta, the parent company behind Facebook and Instagram, has unleashed Threads, an innovative social media app set to give Twitter a run for its money. And boy, oh boy, has it made a splash! Within hours of its release, Meta’s Threads amassed a jaw-dropping user base of millions, earning its reputation as the potential 'Twitter killer' in no time.

Threads, Instagram’s text-based sibling, has burst onto the scene, sweeping over 100 countries like a digital tornado. And even with a few hiccups along the way, it didn't take long for the user count to skyrocket to a staggering 30 million by Thursday noon, leaving Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg beaming with pride.

A star-studded lineup of celebrities has flocked to Threads, ensuring it's not just another app lost in cyberspace. Oprah, the fabulous Shakira, and the fiery Gordon Ramsay have all jumped aboard this digital bandwagon. And let's not forget the corporate heavyweights who've joined the party, including Taco Bell, Netflix, Spotify, and the mighty Washington Post, just to name a few!

Threads has arrived, and the social media landscape will never be the same. But what is Threads exactly? Here’s a comprehensive guide to Meta’s newest app.

What Is Threads?

Threads is a text-based conversation app designed by Meta to provide a space where users can engage in discussions about their interests, connect with creators, and build a loyal following. As a free-to-download platform, Threads aims to foster a community where ideas, opinions, and creativity can be shared with the world.

Who Is Using Threads So Far?

Threads is quickly becoming a platform for celebrities, brands, and start-ups, and it has experienced an astounding level of early success, with five million sign-ups in the first four hours and a user base of 30 million as of Thursday morning. Several prominent brands, celebrities, and influencers have quickly embraced Threads. Billboard, HBO, NPR, and Netflix were among the first to create accounts, while famous personalities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Oprah, and Kim Kardashian have also joined the platform. Businesses are now learning to leverage this social media platform to drive business success!

Getting Started with Meta’s Threads:

Users need an existing Instagram account to access Threads, as the app requires logging in through Instagram credentials. Once logged in, users can follow the same accounts they do on Instagram or explore and follow new individuals. It's important to note that deleting a Threads account also requires deleting the associated Instagram account.

Threads and Twitter Similarities:

Threads exhibits certain similarities to Twitter in terms of features, such as newsfeeds, 'like' functionality represented by heart-shaped symbols, and the ability to repost content. However, Threads introduces its own terminology, referring to retweets as 'reposts' and tweets as 'threads'. This similarity has raised concerns and even led to potential legal action from Twitter as Meta seeks to challenge the microblogging giant.

A leaked letter obtained by the daring sleuths at Semafor unveiled an intense legal battle between Twitter and Meta over the revolutionary app, Threads. Buckle up as we dive into this thrilling clash of the titans!

In the corner of Twitter, we have attorney Alex Spiro, representing the blue bird's interests. In a letter addressed to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and dated Wednesday, Spiro accuses Meta of a dastardly deed. He claims that Meta unlawfully snatched Twitter's trade secrets and other intellectual property by allegedly recruiting former Twitter employees to craft their very own "copycat" app.

Meta's spokesperson, Andy Stone, however, boldly stated that no one on the Threads engineering team has any ties to Twitter.

Threads Functionality and Limitations:

Threads allows posts of up to 500 characters, surpassing Twitter's traditional 280-character limit, and supports sharing photos, videos up to five minutes long, and links. Users can share their posts on other platforms and directly to their Instagram stories. Notably, Threads currently lacks features such as hashtags and direct messaging between users, but Meta acknowledges these limitations and hints at potential future updates.

Threads Privacy and Data Concerns:

As with any app, privacy concerns arise. According to Meta, the same safety measures employed on Instagram, such as enforcing community guidelines and providing user control tools, will be utilized. Content warnings, similar to those on Instagram, help manage search queries from conspiracy theories to COVID-19 misinformation.

Privacy concerns also arise as Threads has the potential to collect various personal information, including health, financial details, contacts, browsing and search history, location data, purchases, and sensitive information. These aspects are disclosed in the app's privacy policy on the App Store. Notably, Threads is currently unavailable in the European Union, which adheres to strict data privacy regulations. Meta has informed the Data Privacy Commission in Ireland, its main EU privacy regulator, about the absence of plans for a Threads launch in the bloc, citing regulatory uncertainty.

The Future of Meta’s Threads:

While Instagram Threads has gained early momentum, its long-term success remains uncertain. Meta has a history of launching standalone apps that were eventually discontinued. However, industry experts suggest that Threads can significantly challenge Twitter. User feedback, engagement, and introducing new features will be crucial in determining the app's future trajectory.

Threads has indeed changed the social media scene, garnering significant attention as a potential disruptor in the realm of microblogging. Its rapid user adoption and the participation of prominent brands and celebrities signal a new era in social media engagement, which could pose significant challenges and opportunities for business owners thriving on digital platforms.
